What is the EU inspection for vans?

Vans in class N1 (gross weight under 3,500 kg) go through the same type of safety inspection as passenger cars, but with a stricter interval and extra focus on load-related components. EU inspection for vans must be carried out every year after the first inspection — unlike passenger cars which are every two years. The reason is that vans drive longer distances, are often loaded to the maximum and wear down faster.

What gets extra attention on a van?

  • Brake system: load test with extra focus on brakes holding with payload. Drum brakes (common on van rear axles) checked for drum and lining wear.
  • Suspension and springs: stricter limits because vans often run heavily loaded. Leaf springs, hangers and bushings inspected.
  • Body construction: if the van has a separate load box (panel van, flatbed, refrigerated body) we inspect the chassis attachment, joints and doors/hatches.
  • Load securing points: the recessed rings/rails for tying down loads must be intact and functional. Helpful to empty the load area beforehand so we can see them.
  • Lights and reflectors: vans often have extra work lights, beacon, or reflective tape — all checked.
  • Trailer connection: if fitted, electrical socket and tow ball connection are inspected.

How long does it take?

Typically 45–60 minutes — a bit longer than a passenger car because there are more components to inspect, especially with custom interiors or load boxes. If the vehicle arrives fully loaded (we recommend emptying first) brake testing under load takes longer.

How often does the van need an EU inspection?

Class N1 (under 3,500 kg): first inspection after 4 years, then every year. Class N2 (3,500–12,000 kg): every year from first inspection. Stricter than passenger cars but more flexible than heavy trucks. If your business van is over 3,500 kg or you tow trailers over certain limits, you may also need a tachograph — separate regulation, not part of the EU inspection.
