When can a stone chip be repaired?

A small stone chip in the windshield can in most cases be repaired if it is caught early. Repair is suitable when the chip is smaller than around 25 mm in diameter, does not sit in the driver's primary line of sight (the A-zone directly in front of the steering wheel) and has not penetrated all the way through the glass. The chip must also be free of dirt, water and ice — these prevent the resin from bonding correctly. Classic chip types that can be fixed are star breaks, bullseyes (round) and combination breaks. Long, sharp cracks that run several centimetres are usually too large for pure repair.

How the repair is performed

We start by cleaning the chip and the surrounding area thoroughly. Then we drill a tiny hole down to the bottom of the damage — this gives the resin access to every cavity and air pocket. A vacuum injector pulls out air and moisture before filling the damage with an optically clear resin matched to the refractive index of the glass. The resin is then UV-cured for a few minutes before we sand and polish the surface flat. The result is an almost invisible spot — you can find where it used to be if you look for it, but the crack is stopped and the structural integrity of the glass is restored.

Time and price

A typical repair takes 30–45 minutes from drive-in to drive-out. You can drive away straight after the procedure — no curing time to worry about. The price is normally 800–1,500 NOK per chip. The most important point, though, is insurance coverage: almost every Norwegian car policy with comprehensive cover includes glass cover, and glass repair is usually 100 % covered with no excess. We file the claim directly with the insurer on your behalf if you wish.

Why act quickly

A small stone chip should be repaired as quickly as possible — ideally within 1–2 weeks of the damage occurring. When temperature swings (warm engine versus cold night), vibrations from road use kick in, and particularly during winter when moisture freezes in the chip and expands it, the damage spreads. What began as a small spot can within days become a long crack across the whole windshield. By then it is too late to repair, and you have to replace the entire glass — which costs 5,000–15,000 NOK and often also requires ADAS calibration.

Frequently asked questions

Can every stone chip be repaired?

No. Repair requires the damage to be smaller than around 25 mm, outside the driver's primary line of sight, and not penetrating all the way through the glass. Long cracks (over 5–8 cm) or chips where dirt/moisture have entered are usually too far gone and require replacement.

How long before it is too late to repair?

Typically 1–2 weeks if you treat the car gently. But extreme temperature swings and especially frost can grow the damage within days. Our advice is to book a slot as soon as the damage is spotted — it is cheap insurance against a full glass replacement.

Why is repair cheaper than replacement?

Repair typically costs 800–1,500 NOK and is done with no excess via glass insurance. Replacement costs 5,000–15,000+ NOK (including ADAS calibration on modern cars) and usually carries a 2,000–5,000 NOK excess. You save both time and money.

Does repair affect the strength of the glass?

Properly performed resin injection restores around 95 % of the original glass structure and prevents further crack growth. It is safe and approved under EU standards. A repaired windshield also passes the EU technical inspection without remarks.

Can I drive immediately after the repair?

Yes. The UV cure is fully completed at the workshop, so you can drive away straight away. We recommend waiting 24 hours before washing the car so the resin can fully set, but it does not affect drivability.
