Transmission and clutch replacement
Clutch replacement on manual cars, gear-oil change on automatics (incl. DSG/CVT) and gearbox repair. We diagnose wear before we replace — and always give a fixed quote.

Clutch and gearbox — manual and automatic
Power transmission between the engine and wheels consists of a clutch (or torque converter) and a gearbox. Both components are subject to wear, and when something fails the car becomes either undriveable or damages itself further if you keep driving. We replace clutches on manual cars, perform gear-oil service on automatics — including DSG, CVT and conventional automatics — and carry out full gearbox repair when needed. All car brands are welcome.
Manual gearbox — clutch replacement
A clutch typically lasts 100,000–200,000 km, but life depends on driving style and use. City driving with many starts and stops and steep terrain wears clutches quickly, while motorway driving spares them. Symptoms of a worn clutch are that the engine revs up without speed increasing (clutch slipping), bell-like noises during engagement, or that gear-shifting becomes heavy and notchy. We replace the clutch as a complete set (disc, pressure plate and release bearing) — it's neither cheaper nor smarter to replace single parts. Manual gearboxes also need oil changes, typically every 60,000–80,000 km.
Automatics — DSG, CVT and conventional
Automatics require gear-oil changes more often than most people think. DSG gearboxes (dual-clutch, used by VW group) need oil changes every 60,000 km. CVT gearboxes (Toyota, Subaru, Nissan) require specific CVT fluid that is costly to neglect. Conventional automatics (ZF 6-/8-speed, Aisin) typically last 80,000–100,000 km between changes. We stock the correct oil for all brands and use machine flushing where the car requires it. Symptoms of a struggling automatic are jerky shifts, slip under acceleration, or the car "hunting" between gears.
Price drivers: dual-clutch and special tools
Dual-clutch (DSG) clutches are expensive — the clutch pack alone can cost NOK 15,000–25,000, and labour 8–14 hours. Conventional manual clutches are cheaper, typically NOK 8,000–18,000 including labour. Automatic gear-oil service runs NOK 3,000–8,000 depending on fluid quantity and specification. A full gearbox overhaul is rarely cost-effective on older cars — replacement with a used or reconditioned unit is often cheaper.
Diagnosis before the job
Before doing the job we always run a road test and document the symptoms. The slip test (clutch) is done by pulling the handbrake, putting it in 3rd gear, and slowly releasing the clutch — an intact clutch should stall the engine quickly, while a worn clutch lets the engine keep running. On automatics we read fault codes and check gear-oil level and colour. Only after diagnosis do we give a fixed quote.
