When should wheels be changed in Norway?

In Norway, winter tires are required when road and weather conditions make them necessary — in practice from late autumn until spring. The formal rule is that summer tires cannot be used between 1 November and the first Monday after Easter Monday in southern Norway, and somewhat longer in northern Norway (15 October to 30 April). Many drivers choose to change when temperatures consistently stay below 7 °C, because summer tires harden and lose grip in cold weather long before there is actual winter conditions on the road.

How long does a wheel change take?

A full wheel change on four wheels typically takes 30–45 minutes when the tires are already mounted on rims. The car is lifted on a hoist, wheel nuts are loosened with a pneumatic tool, wheels are swapped and tightened with a torque wrench to manufacturer specification — usually 110–140 Nm for passenger cars. We also check tire pressure on all four wheels and reset the tire pressure sensors (TPMS) where the car requires it.

What do we do during the actual change?

After the wheels are off we quickly go over brake discs, pads and rims for visible wear or damage. We check that wheel bolts are not corroded or deformed, apply a thin layer of copper paste to the hub mating surface so the wheels don't seize for the next change, and verify that rims and wheel nuts have the correct specifications. Finally we visually check the tread depth — if it is below 4 mm we let you know and recommend new tires before next season.

Why should you book early?

Seasonal change is the busiest period of the year at every workshop. During the most hectic weeks — typically end of October and start of November in the autumn, and end of March/beginning of April in the spring — waiting times can reach 2–3 weeks. Booking early gives you a choice of several available days and avoids driving with the wrong seasonal tires for a longer period. Tire hotel customers receive priority slots before other customers can book.

What about tires without rims?

If you have tires that need to be mounted on rims at every season change (without a tire hotel solution), the job takes longer and costs more. We always recommend complete tire sets with their own rims, or a tire hotel agreement where seasonal tires stay with us and are ready for mounting when you call. That way you avoid both the actual tire mounting work and the storage problem at home.

Frequently asked questions

When should I change to winter tires?

The law requires winter tires when driving conditions make them necessary. In practice you should change when temperatures consistently drop below 7 °C — usually October/November depending on where you live. In southern Norway summer tires are prohibited 1 November to the first Monday after Easter Monday.

Can I drive with summer tires in winter?

No. It is illegal when conditions require winter tires, and very risky — summer tires harden and lose grip below 7 °C. You risk both fines and increased accident risk.

How many times can the wheels be changed?

The wheel change itself (swapping summer and winter wheels with rims) can in principle be done unlimited times as long as wheel bolts are not damaged. The tire itself has a limited lifespan — typically 6–10 years or until tread is worn.

What does a wheel change cost?

A standard wheel change with rims typically costs 600–900 NOK for a passenger car. Tire hotel customers often get a discount or free changes as part of the agreement. We always provide a fixed price up front.
